Career Paths For A Holistic Nutritionist Beyond Private Practice | Online Nutrition Training Course & Diplomas | Edison Institute of Nutrition

Many people look at studying to become a holistic nutritionist because they know that as long as there are people who eat, they have a viable career.

People are becoming more and more aware of the need to incorporate healthy diets into their lifestyle, thanks to the prolific information available online.

As a result, we’ve seen an increase in the number of holistic nutritionists, in order to meet demand.

But while going into private practice is always an option for you, it’s not the only one.

Here are some of the examples of possible career paths available to you, if you’re considering this for your future.

Private Practice Is A Lucrative Option

For many people, the goal is private practice, as this business model has proven to be a very lucrative one.

Holistic nutritionists can live very well off the salaries and profits of a private practice, and it provides a stable foundation for future career moves in the field.

For example, many of Edison’s faculty are currently – or were formerly – in private practice, and have discovered a love for passing along their experience and knowledge in teaching roles.

If you open your own private practice, you’ll need to be a competent holistic nutritionist, you’ll also be business owner, with all the inherent challenges, hurdles, and joys.

Being a business owner involves overseeing all aspects of your business, including the ones that you aren’t as competent at or that don’t interest you as much.

However, there are a number of great benefits.

First, you’ll have on opportunity to focus your brand and your professional life around your most passionate goals.

You’ll have more control over your work-life balance.

You’ll be able to be proud of creating a nurturing environment for all, and jobs for others in your community.

Many registered holistic nutritionists find it most fulfilling to work in a clinic alongside other types of healthcare practitioners as well.

This allows you to contribute your specific skills to a greater team to provide the ultimate healing path for each one of your clients.

After all, there’s no single modality that covers every single health issue a person could possible ever have.

Still others find it more fulfilling to run their own individual clinic, or even still to run a mobile practice where you meet your clients at their homes.

Even within the scope of private practice, there are many options.

Beyond Private Practice

But maybe private practice is not for you. That’s okay.

The trick is to find what makes you want to go to work in the morning, and if private practice – no matter how great it might be for others – doesn’t work for YOU, then consider these other options.

1. Run A Health Food Store

This is a great option for holistic nutritionists who love spending time dealing with people directly in their community.

Managing a store will usually get you a regular salary that you can depend on, and regular hours.

You will of course need to be able to manage a team – but that’s also opportunity for you to share your knowledge and help build their skills and expertise.

It can be a very rewarding job, as you’ll likely develop deep and wonderful relationships with your regular customers.

2. Manage Or Direct A Meal Prep Company

Meal prep companies are enjoying a huge boom right now, thanks to a few big-name brands who have managed to scale into international businesses.

However, there are likely dozens of local meal-prep companies in your area, if you are willing to put in the time to research them.

These companies rely on nutritionists to ensure the meals their chefs design meet nutritional guidelines.

Some food prep companies can have a specialty – such as meals for the keto diet or diabetic menus – these will require your expertise.

3. Offer Teaching Programs For The Public

Today, there are plenty of tools and resources for you to draw on if you’re considering running your own programs for the public.

Especially if you’re looking at running them as online classes or webinars, the cost to entry for a business of this type is certainly not prohibitive.

This type of career is good for those who enjoy speaking in front of crowds and are comfortable in the spotlight.

4. Write About Holistic Nutrition

One very popular option for our students and graduates is starting a holistic nutrition blog, and writing about holistic nutrition.

With the tools available on the market, and with just a little help if it’s your first time, you can get your blog up and running over a weekend.

All you’ll need is to carve out the time regularly to spend writing – you can get started simply by writing down all the ideas bubbling in your head right now.

This is a good opportunity for people who love to write and those who love to constantly be learning, as this is a natural side effect of managing a successful blog.

Though it may be surprising, you can make a lucrative living by running a blog.

Not only that, but you can also find jobs writing in local wellness magazines.

5. Run Corporate Wellness Workshops

Many corporations have listened to the research and they understand that a happy and healthy workforce is a successful and productive workforce.

As a result, many have incorporated lunch-and-learns to their monthly calendars, in order to support employee work-life balance, and they don’t mind spending the money.

Corporate wellness workshops are not only a good way of making a very good fee, but it can also allow you to pick up private clients that you can build an ongoing relationship with.

6. Eventually, Become A Teacher

There’s a real joy in being able to pass on your knowledge and experience to the next generation, and this is exactly why so many holistic nutritionists eventually turn to teaching.

Teaching is a wonderful way to both give back, but it is also a way to recoup investment on the years of learning, experience and knowledge you’ve accumulated over time.
